UAW 872 is hiring: Organizer in Training
Overview
UAW Local 872 is the union of graduate student workers at the University of Southern California. Our union is looking for active organizers to join a paid, eight-week Organizer in Training program to further develop organizing skills and build union membership and participation of Graduate Student Workers at USC, with a particular focus on the Viterbi School of Engineering. These are eight-week positions at 10 hours per week (.25 FTE), starting on Monday, July 6th and ending Friday, August 28th. There will also be a possibility to extend the position an additional four weeks, to September 25th, if there is mutual interest between the candidate and the Local.
Job Duties
Sign up new members and answer questions about benefits, rights, and protections in the union contract
Conduct one-to-one organizing conversations with a focus on building union capacity
Identify and develop new union leaders
Utilize and maintain membership lists
Meet regularly for coaching by experienced union organizers, including 2-3 hour weekly trainings
Assigned between 1-3 departments as their “turf”, depending on number of workers in each assigned department

Passionate about improving workplace conditions at USC
Detail-oriented
Committed to higher education
Willing to have conversations about the importance of union membership and participation with academic workers from diverse backgrounds
Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed
Ability to regularly work in person on the assigned campus and occasionally at other sites in Los Angeles (e.g., UAW Region 6 office in Pico Rivera, other USC campuses and worksites)
Knowledge of Google Workspace and Zoom
Preference for applicants to be current graduate student workers at USC
UAW 872 is unable to sponsor a visa at this time
Pay
$3,169 for eight weeks (equivalent to $20,600 annually for .25 FTE)
No benefits will be provided
